Anti-Aging-Food

“Forever young”, “120 years old and as vital as at 30”: The anti-aging wave is flooding the market with pills, books and fitness offers. A large proportion of the products have, at best, dubious utility for the consumer. But as so often – there is some truth at the core. The fact is, human genetic makeup could still allow for a longer life than average today. At the same time, it is completely normal for the human body to break down tissue and organ functions from the mid-20s, the detoxification system begins to weaken and certain hormone levels drop.

Dangers of anti-aging hormone therapy

The well-heeled in particular have the anti-aging hormone cocktail mixed: DHEA (dehydroepiandrosterone), a precursor for all sex hormones, or the growth hormone HGH (human growth hormone) with a wide range of effects on the entire body.

The effects and side effects of these hormone therapies have not been tested over a long period of time. Food supplements of all kinds are simpler and cheaper: vitamins,  minerals , omega-3 fatty acids, pills, powder or  juice . It is correct and scientifically proven: Aging is a question of lifestyle. Anyone who eats a balanced diet, drinks moderately, does not smoke and does enough sport has a better chance of growing old healthily.

Oxidative stress makes you old

The cell-biological root cause of aging is the destruction of cell structures by free radicals. Some of these highly reactive substances are produced in the normal  metabolism  of the cell, for example when generating energy. Other radicals enter our body through environmental toxins and smoking. The highly aggressive molecules speed up the life clock of the cells.

Luckily, antioxidants are able to disrupt this reaction mechanism. Effective antioxidants are beta-carotene (the precursor of vitamin A), vitamins C and E and the trace element selenium. However, the individual nutrients administered via pills and powders hardly had the expected effect in scientific studies.

Fresh foods, especially vegetables, fruit and fresh herbs, had far more protection against free radicals and also against cancer and cardiovascular diseases.

Sport prolongs life

Fresh salads, meals rich in vegetables and whole grain products have the advantage that they fill you up without giving the body too much energy. Because a balanced balance of calories consumed and burned, i.e. a normal body weight, is an equally important prerequisite for staying healthy. Regular exercise protects the heart, regardless of body weight.

The right fats

Vegetable oils such as sunflower or  rapeseed oil  contain a particularly large amount of polyunsaturated fatty acids, which help to lower cholesterol levels. Olive oil, with its high content of monounsaturated oleic acid, also has a beneficial effect. The much-advertised omega-3 fatty acids are mainly found in fatty sea fish and protect against cardiovascular diseases. At most one third of the daily amount of fat should consist of saturated fatty acids, which are mainly found in animal foods, because they raise cholesterol levels.

The forgotten factor: water

Water is the most important and most underestimated food. It doesn’t matter whether it’s juice spritzers,  mineral water  or  tea , the daily drinking quantity of around two liters should be adhered to. Just think of the Mediterranean cuisine: lots of vegetables and fruit, high-quality oils, an aqua minerale with every  coffee  , physical exertion in the fresh air and everything with serenity and enjoyment!
