Apple cider vinegar is considered an old home remedy for the prevention and treatment of a wide variety of ailments. Not only is it said to have a positive effect on blood sugar levels, daily drinking of apple cider vinegar is also said to strengthen the immune system. Thanks to its antibacterial effect, it is also used to treat cystitis. But how healthy is apple cider vinegar really and what side effects can it have? Healthy effects of apple cider vinegar

Drinking apple cider vinegar every day can help supply your body with vitamins, trace elements and minerals. Vinegar is also said to wake you up, strengthen your immune system and help against headaches and  asthma . In addition,  apple cider vinegar is considered a remedy for healthy skin, hair and nails.

Apple cider vinegar is also said to have many other healthy effects, which are usually not scientifically proven: It is said to lower blood sugar levels and therefore be able to support the treatment of  diabetes  . It is also said to help against  high blood pressure  and lower cholesterol and blood fat levels. An apple cider vinegar diet is even said to boost digestion and metabolism, making it easier to lose weight. In addition, apple cider vinegar applied externally is said to help against warts and reduce fever in the form of apple cider vinegar wraps.

Vinegar works against bacteria

Apple cider vinegar has  an antibacterial effect,  which means it stops bacteria from multiplying. When drunk, this vinegar is said to help with cystitis, for example, and promote wound healing in open wounds.

When used externally, apple cider vinegar is said to help against the smell of sweat, bites, itching  and  sunburn , among other things   . To do this, simply dab the appropriate area with the undiluted liquid.  A 15-minute foot bath with diluted apple cider vinegar in a ratio of 1:4 is recommended to combat  sweaty feet and athlete’s foot.

A mouth rinse with half a teaspoon of apple cider vinegar in a glass of water is recommended for treating sores and injuries in the mouth and throat.  Gargling with a mixture of apple cider vinegar and water is also often recommended for  sore throats .

Apple cider vinegar has an antibacterial effect and should therefore be drunk to prevent putrefactive bacteria from spreading in the intestine. Used regularly, it is said to act as a gentle colon cleanser and alleviate digestive problems such as  constipation  and  flatulence  .

In terms of digestion, many other positive effects are also attributed to it. It is said, among other things, that apple cider vinegar helps against  heartburn  and reduces the feeling of fullness in the event of a lack of stomach acid.

Because of its positive effect on digestion and metabolism,  apple cider vinegar is also popular as a means of losing weight  . Because the drink is supposed to detoxify, boost fat burning and curb appetite at the same time.

Effect on the acid-base balance

Even if apple cider vinegar tastes sour, it is a slightly alkaline food. The organic acids in apple cider vinegar are used by the body to generate energy, so that only basic minerals such as  potassium  remain after the metabolic process. Therefore, apple cider vinegar is considered a remedy for heartburn, which calms the acid-base balance and  can prevent acidification  .

Nutritional Content of Apple Cider Vinegar

The vitamins and minerals found in apples are retained to a significantly lesser extent. In addition, further nutrients are added through fermentation   . However, the vinegar variant does not come close to the nutritional content of an apple.

Buy apple cider vinegar – what to look out for?

When buying apple cider vinegar, you should pay attention to good quality. Unpasteurized (i.e. not heated) naturally cloudy (i.e. not filtered) organic apple cider vinegar made from whole fruits is ideal.

Even if the vinegar is available in the supermarket, better quality is often offered in the health food store. Because the industrially produced apple cider vinegar is often made from leftover apples and contains artificial additives, so that it usually contains significantly fewer nutrients.

You can also make your own apple cider vinegar with a little patience. If you want to make the drink yourself, you should use organic apples or apple cider.

Even though apple cider vinegar is considered an old home remedy for a wide variety of ailments, much of the effect attributed to it has  not yet been scientifically proven.  Only its antibacterial effect is proven. Although one study provided evidence of a possible influence of vinegar on insulin metabolism, the study had only a few participants and is therefore not considered to be meaningful.

Apple cider vinegar is also offered as a  dietary supplement  containing apple cider vinegar powder. So far, however, there is no scientific evidence for the effectiveness of the mostly expensive capsules and tablets with apple cider vinegar powder, but they probably do no harm either.

Side Effects of Apple Cider Vinegar

According to experts, apple cider vinegar is safe to consume in small amounts, for example in salad dressing. Side effects can occur when  drinking apple cider vinegar  , mainly due to the acid it contains:

  • If you have heartburn or a sensitive stomach or intestines, you should first consult a doctor to determine whether apple cider vinegar drinks are recommended, as the acid can attack the mucous membranes.
  • To avoid irritation of the throat, apple cider vinegar should not be drunk straight.
  • Since the vinegar attacks the tooth enamel, it is important to always rinse your mouth out thoroughly after drinking the drink and wait half an hour before brushing your teeth.

Apple cider vinegar is not suitable for people with a fructose intolerance. If you have sensitive skin, external use can also irritate and dry out the skin.

The use of apple cider vinegar is generally permitted during  pregnancy  , but it is better to clarify the recommended amounts with a doctor beforehand. People with diabetes  or  high blood pressure  should also  consult a doctor before drinking apple cider vinegar and clarify possible disadvantages, since apple cider vinegar can affect insulin levels and potassium absorption and interact with various medications.

Basically, you should never try to treat a serious illness yourself with home remedies, but always seek medical help. This also applies if minor symptoms do not improve after a few days.
