The best diaper for the baby
Some parents swear by cloth diapers, others by their disposable versions. But which is the best diaper for babies ‘  bottom?  Children wear diapers for around three years, and even longer in recent years. In newborns, they need to be changed up to eight times a day, later about five times. Over the “diaper years” there are easily between 6,000 and 8,000 diaper changes. And they weigh a lot: on average, every baby produces a tonne of disposable diaper waste, according to Stiftung Warentest. Reason enough to think extensively about the packaging of your offspring.
Disposable diaper or reusable diaper?
A diaper should do one thing above all: keep the baby’s buttocks as dry as possible. Bacteria and fungi  can easily settle and multiply in the damp and warm diaper environment – a sore bottom or a fungal infection is the annoying and painful result. A plus for disposable diapers, say their supporters. Because now they absorb liquid well and bind it inside. In cloth diapers, the climate is often more humid, but the natural materials allow more air to reach the skin and – according to the proponents of reusable diapers – this is good for the baby’s delicate skin.
Experts recommend  the cotton alternative for sensitive children and children who are prone to allergies . However, the diaper then has to be changed consistently and frequently. In many cases, if you have a sensitive buttocks, it also helps to simply try out the disposable diapers from another supplier.
By the way: The reusable diaper also has a medical advantage: some newborns are born with a misaligned hip ( hip dysplasia ). Orthopaedists then recommend a wide wrap technique, which can help in mild cases and can replace a pair of spreader pants. It is also often said that cloth nappies take around half a year to change because the child is more aware of the wetness in them. It doesn’t matter which diaper – always give your child’s bottom time in the fresh air: often let your baby kick around naked in a warm room on a blanket or under a heat lamp.

If you want to use reusable diapers but don’t have the time or inclination to clean them, a diaper service can help – information is available from the Association of Diaper Services.
