Treatment of constipation in pregnancy

Certain laxatives are taboo during an existing pregnancy, as some of the ingredients can trigger premature contractions of the uterus and thus pose an exceptionally high-risk potential for the unborn child. Therefore, It is better to go the natural route in the event of constipation symptoms and explicitly try to adapt your diet to the changed metabolic situation.

A wholesome and varied diet rich in vegetables and fruits contains many dietary fibres that stimulate and maintain intestinal activity. In addition, they also keep their blood sugar level constant, which prevents the “cravings” that many pregnant women are familiar with.

Get enough exercise and drink plenty of water.

Adequate fluid intake of around two to three litres a day supports the work of the dietary fibres in the intestine, as they swell up with the fluid and thus stimulate intestinal activity. If you don’t just want to drink water, many well-tolerated gastrointestinal teas support your digestive tract in its work.

Sufficient exercise also positively affects intestinal activity – and the fresh air is good for your immune system.

 

Constipation in pregnancy: Help from the pharmacy

In addition, preparations from Plantago ovata seed coats can be a solution: The powder from Indian psyllium is dissolved in water and, like the other dietary fibres, ensures improved intestinal motility. Guar and milk sugar have a stool-regulating effect and are also very effective. If you have stubborn constipation, ask your pharmacist for advice on which remedy he can recommend – other chemical laxatives are not recommended during pregnancy or are even taboo for the reasons mentioned above.
