Corona during pregnancy – virus affects placenta!

Corona infection during pregnancy can lead to serious complications. Because SARS-CoV-2 could also be detected in the placenta (placenta). The disease endangers mother and child – a vaccination can protect the young family happiness.

Expectant mothers are particularly at risk due to various factors.

Corona: health risks during pregnancy

University of Montreal experts analyzed a total of 7,569 pregnancies during COVID-19 infection. The risk of preeclampsia can increase by up to 33 percent, especially in severe but also in very mild cases.

This can have life-threatening consequences, including cerebral edema and acute kidney failure. Since the virus sometimes also affects the vascular system and thus the placenta (placenta), the following problems can occur in addition to preeclampsia:

  • gestational diabetes
  • low birth weight
  • Premature births with subsequent stay in intensive care units

The number of miscarriages and stillbirths was also significantly higher in connection with a COVID-19 infection. So far, nothing is known about the exact cause of the consequences. A corona infection can lead to functional disorders of the endothelium, and the placenta can also be affected in this context. So far, however, no consequential damage, such as occurs with  rubella  or  Zika  , has been observed.

Corona viruses detected in the placenta

American doctors were also able to detect the delta variant of SARS-CoV-2 in the placenta of three infected pregnant women. The placenta showed signs of inflammation, and a PCR test of the placenta tissue on both the mother and the child was positive. In two cases, it was not possible to check whether the fetuses themselves were also already infected with SARS-CoV-2. In the third case, the test was negative.

One child had to be delivered before the due date, two of the mothers affected suffered a  miscarriage .

Due to the serious complications and the high risk, experts recommend a corona vaccination to unvaccinated pregnant women from the second trimester of pregnancy.
