Corona: These are the largest sources of infection

Contact restrictions, closed shops and the obligation to work from home have long been a consequence of the corona pandemic. There was a lot of discussion about the restrictions, and the risk of infection was repeatedly re-examined. With the alpha variant, which first appeared in England and which harbors an increased risk of infection, the number of infections rose rapidly. British scientists analyzed corona cases in connection with the location and date of attendance on the basis of national contact tracing. The study, previously published in the science magazine The Lancet, shows which places are particularly likely to become infected. Read more about this here.

Corona infection: high risk for hairdressers and cosmetic treatments

Although hairdressers, cosmetics and nail salons in England were closed for about a month during the study period, the probability of becoming infected there was rated as particularly high. The mask requirement and distance rules also apply in Great Britain. Although customers and hairdressers are recommended to wear an FFP2 mask, a type 2 medical mask and a face shield are sufficient.

Although the number of cases in personal services was low, if a corona infection was found, many people became infected, mostly due to the small rooms.

In Germany, safety measures in hair salons vary depending on the county or city incidence. It is not yet known how the FFP2 mask requirement, rapid antigen tests and the square meter rule in the salon affect the risk of infection in this country.

Risk of infection in kindergarten higher than in schools

The risk   of becoming infected with Corona is higher in educational institutions such as daycare centers, kindergartens, preschools and special schools than in primary and secondary schools.

Physical proximity or distance in particular can influence the risk of infection. Due to their age, there is often longer and closer contact between educators and children.

Due to the extensive school closures in England, schools overall accounted for a small proportion of new infections.

Private meetings with friends and relatives

Before the Christmas and Easter holidays, Health Minister Jens Spahn appealed to the population to keep contacts as low as possible during the holidays in order to reduce the risk of infection.

The British study confirms the Minister of Health’s appeal: Meetings with friends and family usually take place in a small space. Hygiene restrictions and mask requirements are not observed. The risk of infection is particularly high here.

The risk of infection is low here

Due to the strict lockdown and significant security measures, the risk of infection in nursing professions and social institutions is rated as particularly low. The contact restrictions, hygiene measures and the lockdown are also taking effect in other areas:

  • supermarkets
  • universities
  • Public service
