Corona vaccination also possible during pregnancy

The Standing Vaccination Commission (STIKO) advocates corona vaccination for pregnant women with an “increased risk of exposure due to their living conditions”. In principle, however, the vaccine for pregnant women is not recommended by the STIKO.

While the World Health Organization (WHO) also recommends the prioritized corona vaccination for expectant mothers, the Standing Vaccination Commission (STIKO) only recommends a COVID vaccination in special cases.

STIKO extends vaccination recommendations for pregnant women

Due to the increased risk of pregnant women suffering from a severe course of the corona virus, STIKO has extended the vaccination recommendation for expectant mothers.

Gynecologists can therefore make the vaccination recommendation after an individual examination. The vaccination itself can also be carried out by family doctors or in the vaccination center with the appropriate letter. The recommendation of the vaccination commission is limited to high-risk patients and expectant mothers “with an increased risk of exposure due to their living conditions”.

Just like their close contacts, pregnant women should be listed in priority group 2 in the vaccination sequence. “It is a signal to politicians, but also to the attending gynecologists, that vaccination can be generously recommended to pregnant women after an individual examination,” said Marianne Röbl-Mathieu, representative of the German Society for Gynecology and Obstetrics (DGGG) in the STIKO, the newspapers of the Funke media group.

However, due to the small amount of study data, the STIKO still advises against general vaccination recommendations during  pregnancy  . In European countries and the USA, the  corona vaccine is  already being vaccinated on expectant mothers. Initial evaluations indicate minor side effects and  vaccination reactions  .
