Corona variant Delta plus: The virus continues to mutate

Another virus variant has emerged in India. Dubbed Delta Plus, the mutation is listed as a cause for concern by authorities. The variant has already been detected in several states.

The mutation has already been detected in 16 cases in the state of Maharashtra and two dozen more in three other Indian states.

Delta Plus: Little data on the virus variant

A total of four virus variants are currently classified as worrying. These mutations are called alpha, beta, gamma, and delta variants and originate in different regions.

To be classified as “of concern”, a virus must meet one or more criteria:

  • easy transmission
  • more severe illness
  • reduced neutralization by antibodies
  • reduced effectiveness of treatment and vaccinations

In the case of the delta variant, which was first detected in India, a more severe course of the disease, combined with hospitalization, occurs particularly frequently.

According to the Indian Ministry of Health, the Delta Plus variant (AY.1) could spread even more easily, affect the lung cells better and be more resistant to the currently approved vaccines.

Indian scientists do not want to  spread panic  for now as there are only few cases and not enough biological and clinical information about Delta Plus to verify.

Delta Plus has also been registered in other countries. In addition to the USA, Great Britain, Portugal, Switzerland and Japan, Poland, Nepal, Russia and China are also affected.
