Cranberry juice against urinary tract infections!?

According to Ines Drewe from the German Institute for Nutritional Medicine and Dietetics (DIET), the tannins from cranberries and blueberries, which belong to the group of secondary plant substances, have an inhibiting effect on cystitis caused by E-coli bacteria (Escherichia coli ).

With cranberry juice against urinary tract infections

A Finnish study looked at 150 women, with an average age of 30, who had a urinary tract infection caused by Escherichia coli and were not taking antibiotics. The subjects were divided into three groups for the study. The first group received 50 millilitres of cranberry juice daily for six months. The women in the second group received 100 millilitres of a Lactobacillus GG drink five times a week for a year, and the women in the third group received no interventions.

Six months into the study, only 16 per cent of the women in the cranberry group had experienced at least one recurrence, compared with 39 per cent in the Lactobacillus GG group and 36 per cent in the control group. This shows that cranberry juice significantly reduces the risk of urinary tract infections. The E-coli bacteria attach themselves to the urinary tract epithelium with fine hairs called fimbriae. Only with this adhesion can bacteria trigger an inflammation.

The tannins in the cranberry juice change the surface structure of the bacteria with the fimbriae so that adhesion is no longer possible.

Comparable study

Incidentally, a comparable study was conducted in 1994 with cranberry nectar ( cranberry, a berry fruit native to North America ). In this placebo-controlled study (Avorn et al.), older women drank 300 millilitres of cranberry nectar daily for six months. This juice also contains adequate tannins. The study at the time showed that the risk of developing urinary tract infections was reduced by 58 per cent. DIET experts recommend that women with frequent urinary tract infections drink a quarter of a glass of cranberry juice daily.
