Detox treatment: detoxification for the body

Detox treatment: detoxification for the body

It is considered the miracle weapon against obesity and for detoxification of the body par excellence: the detox cure. This term is associated with various forms of diet and numerous products that are intended to help the body cleanse itself of toxins. But what exactly is a detox? What should be considered during base and juice cleanses? And does a detox diet really do anything? We deliver the answers.

What is a detox?

The term “detox” is an abbreviation of the English word “detoxification”, which means detoxification. A detox cure is the “modern” term for a  detoxification or purification  cure using a special diet. From this point of view, the detox cure is nothing new, because similar forms of diet have been used for many centuries – especially in alternative medicine.

What does a detox cure do?

A tired appearance, a few kilos too much on the scales and generally an exhausted and listless state of mind – that sounds familiar to many. Because everyday vices such as nicotine, caffeine, alcohol, stress, an unhealthy diet and too little exercise and sleep are not good for the body in the long run.

In principle, the body can rid itself of harmful substances on its own. However, if several of the factors mentioned come together over a long period of time, the organism can be overwhelmed with detoxification according to the detox philosophy.

A detoxification cure should be able to remedy exactly this exhausted state of the body by supporting the body’s self-cleansing powers. In addition, the body should be brought back into optimal balance.

What happens during a detox cure?

The detoxifying organs liver, bile, kidneys, intestines, skin and lymphatic system should be stimulated to increased activity as part of the detox diet. The body should therefore be detoxified, the  metabolism  boosted and blood pressure,  cholesterol  and blood sugar levels reduced. Due to the low calorie intake during the detox diet, you can also easily lose a few kilos.

How does a detox work?

There are two answers or variants to the question of how a detox cure works (the terms “cure” and “diet” are used synonymously):

  1. With the   detox diet, which is similar  to fasting , solid food is completely avoided. Instead,  tea , water, fresh fruit and vegetable juices and vegetable broth are on the menu.
  2. In the second variant of the detox diet,  only alkaline foods are allowed.

We present both forms of the detox cure in detail below.

What do you have to consider during a detox cure?

It doesn’t matter which of the two variants you choose – the following six tips should be observed when carrying out a detox:

  1. It is very important that the body   gets enough liquid . Two to three liters of still water or unsweetened  herbal tea  a day are ideal – even with a detox cure with  juice .
  2.  The daily calorie intake should not exceed 800 kilocalories during the detox cure  . Nevertheless, you have to eat a balanced and varied diet to avoid a lack of nutrients, minerals or vitamins. If you are on a longer  diet  , you should consult a doctor.
  3. Unhealthy vices  such as smoking, alcohol,  coffee  and sweets are taboo during the detox cure.
  4. Sufficient  sleep  and  rest breaks  in everyday life support the body’s recovery process.
  5. Moderate  exercise perfectly complements the detox cure. Sports such as gymnastics or yoga activate the lymphatic system and support blood circulation.
  6. At the beginning and at the end of a detox cure, in which you avoid solid food, plan three  relief days  in which you eat light, alkaline foods. In this way you avoid that the circulation is overloaded by changing too quickly.

In addition, the detox diet should only be carried out if one meets the physical requirements. We explain below what these are.

A detox diet is not for everyone

A basic requirement for a detox is that you are healthy. Anyone who  has health problems such as impaired kidney function or heart problems and who suffers or has suffered from  mental health problems or an  eating disorder  should only follow a detox diet under medical supervision.

Pregnant women, breastfeeding women and children should also   refrain from this cure.

Detoxification: Scientific evidence is lacking

It is obvious that you lose weight with a daily intake of less than 800 kilocalories. However, according to the German Society for Nutrition (DGE), it has not yet been scientifically proven that a detox cure promotes the elimination of toxins from the body. Although individual studies indicate that a detox cure could have positive effects on the detoxification of the liver, these are not meaningful due to poor scientific methodology or a small number of cases.

Most experts emphasize that the healthy human body can rid itself of harmful substances without outside help. Short-term lightning diets remained without long-term success.

If you feel overweight or exhausted, you should change your diet and lifestyle permanently instead. Eating healthily, drinking plenty of fluids and getting enough exercise and sleep are the be-all and end-all for physical and mental well-being.

Detox cure with alkaline foods

Solid food is permitted in this form of detox, but not every food should be eaten. Because the detox formula relies exclusively on alkaline foods. You can find out here what you can and cannot eat on such a detox diet and how the cure works.

What does a detox diet with alkaline foods do?

Our well-being depends, among other things, on the acid-base ratio in the body being balanced. It is   extremely unlikely that the body will become acidic due to the wrong diet alone, since the body’s own mechanisms are able to compensate for excessive acidity (e.g. via the kidneys) .

However, initial scientific studies indicate that a long-term, highly acid-forming diet could still have a negative effect on the level of the stress hormone cortisol in the blood and on the cardiovascular and bone systems. A varied diet in terms of a balance between bases and acids is therefore recommended in any case.

In order to restore the balance between acid and base, the detox formula prescribes exclusively or at least predominantly alkaline foods. Because an alkaline diet should provide the body with easily absorbable minerals and  nutrients  and thereby relieve the detoxifying organs. This brings the acid-base balance back into balance.

Experts do not recommend such a diet in the long term, as it can lead to  nutrient  deficiencies. For a limited period of time, however, an alkaline detox is not disadvantageous.

Alkaline foods: what is allowed?

Anyone who thinks that you have to starve on a detox diet is on the wrong track. Because there are numerous delicious foods on the detox menu.
Allowed foods are all alkaline foods. These include, for example:

  • ripe fruit and dried fruit
  • potatoes
  • Salads with bitter substances such as radicchio or  rocket
  • Olive
  • soybeans
  • almonds
  • sesame
  • dried fruit
  • spices and herbs
  • basically any vegetable except tomatoes

It makes sense to only use organic food  and, if possible, unprocessed food for the detox cure  , as these are free of toxins.

What is not allowed?

Acid-forming foods such as:

  • animal foods and fats such as meat, sausage, fish and eggs
  • Grains and grain products such as  bread  and pasta
  • Mustard
  • Vinegar
  • Cashew nuts, peanuts, pistachios
  • sugar and sugary drinks
  • alcoholic beverages
  • caffeinated beverages
  • coloring and flavorings
  • Gluten

You can find a free alkaline food detox plan or guide online or in detox books. For example, you can start the day with a  smoothie  , enjoy a delicious detox salad at lunchtime and have a light soup in the evening.

How long should a detox with alkaline foods last?

There is no general answer to the question of how long a detox should last. Instead, everyone has to decide for themselves individually, just as they feel comfortable.

There are variants of the detox cure with alkaline foods that last from three to 21 days. Beginners are advised to start with a 3 or 5 day course. Intermediates and professionals who have experience in “detoxing” can also do a 7-, 14- or 21-day cycle.
