Do onion bags help against earache?

Ear pain  should be checked out by a doctor to avoid permanent damage. Many people have had to go through the painful experience. Onion bags are a popular home remedy for earaches. But do they actually help?

Causes of earache

The causes of earache are varied. However, they often occur together with colds, especially in autumn. Then there are a particularly large number of bacteria and viruses in the nose and throat. These pass through the  auditory  tube (Eustachian tube) from the nose and throat into the inner ear, where they trigger a  middle ear infection  .

Earaches are not only very painful, they often lead to hearing loss, dizziness,  fever  or ringing in the ears. Most children are affected by a middle ear infection because the auditory tube is shorter than that of adults.

In adults, inflammation of the external auditory canal is also often associated with earache. It can be caused by injury with cotton swabs or by penetrating bath water.

But not all types of earache are directly related to ear discomfort. For example, diseases of the teeth, the jaw joint or the mouth and nose area can also lead to earache.

Treatment with onion bags

The symptoms often appear in the evening or at night. Those affected can try to relieve the pain with the help of onion bags. The onions are diced into small pieces and wrapped in a clean cotton cloth. It is important that there is only one layer of fabric between the bulb and the ear and that the packets are small. These can be easily clipped under a headband or hat. The packet can be placed warm or cold. Depending on what is more comfortable for the patient.

If the pain has not improved by the next day, it is advisable to consult a doctor. A doctor’s visit is necessary if

  • the pain lasts longer and gets stronger,
  • fever is added,
  • hearing loss occurs
  • ringing in the ears and dizziness occur,
  • Self-treatment does not bring improvement.

Timely treatment can help prevent permanent damage.
