The emergency card – a lifesaver in your wallet!
Prepared for the worst
Around two million people in Germany have heart disease and are therefore at increased risk of a medical incident. In such an emergency, those who can tell the doctor exactly what medication they are taking and what concomitant diseases are present without wasting time significantly increase their chances of survival. The German Heart Foundation, therefore, recommends that all heart patients keep an excellent emergency ID card in their wallet.
Information about taking medication and concomitant diseases is essential.
However, only some types of emergency cards are equally suitable. “Booklets that, for example, only contain the entry “Caution: heart disease” are by no means sufficient, emphasizes the chairman of the German Heart Foundation, Professor Dr. Hans Jürgen Becker. “The emergency doctor must know which medication the patient is taking and in what dosage he is taking, what previous treatments have taken place and whether there are concomitant diseases,” the cardiologist explains.
Every minute counts
In cardiac emergencies, every minute counts. However, since there is usually a great deal of confusion in such situations or those affected can no longer express themselves because they are unconscious, the doctor often needs to get all the essential information quickly enough. An emergency card can then quickly become a lifesaver.
A new emergency card from the German Heart Foundation
The German Heart Foundation emergency card, which has just been revised and has already found over a million customers in the past 20 years, therefore offers a lot of space for medical background information. There are not only fields for allergies, blood group membership and drug intolerance but also for diabetes mellitus or kidney dysfunctions, which are often observed in heart patients and play an essential role in emergency therapy.
