Frozen Honey: Stay away from the TikTok trend

Frozen Honey is another trend on TikTok. The semi-frozen honey is hyped as a cool refreshment in summer and a healthy alternative to ice cream. But how healthy is Frozen Honey really?

Refreshing, healthy, the delicious alternative to ice cream – this is how Frozen Honey is presented on TikTok. Frozen Honey is reminiscent of hardened jelly – over 900 million TikTok users are already following the trend.

Frozen Honey – Enjoying honey with health consequences

Frozen Honey is very easy to prepare. The liquid honey is placed in a small plastic bottle and chilled in the fridge or freezer for a few hours until it reaches a jelly-like consistency. Alternatively, the honey can also be bought in a squeeze bottle and frozen in it.

The frozen honey is simply squeezed straight out of the bottle and enjoyed like ice cream – but consuming frozen honey can have health consequences.

  • Gastrointestinal problems:  Some users complain of nausea and  diarrhea after consuming Frozen Honey . The reason: 100 grams of honey contain 40 grams of fructose. Excessive consumption of honey can lead to flatulence , nausea, abdominal pain and diarrhea, especially in people with mild to severe fructose intolerance  .
  • Fluctuations in the blood sugar level:  Due to the high sugar content in honey, the blood sugar level quickly reaches a high level, which can fall just as quickly. As a result, you quickly feel hungry again. A high and frequent sugar intake promotes the development of overweight,  obesity  and   type 2 diabetes mellitus.
  • Dental problems and caries: Caries  bacteria feed on carbohydrates, especially sugar, and convert them into acid, which is responsible for destroying tooth enamel. The result: inflammation of the gums, tooth decay or complete tooth loss.

Frozen honey may be a tasty refreshment – but not a healthy alternative to ice cream or frozen yoghurt in the summer months. Despite its antibacterial and antioxidant effects, the sugar alternative can be harmful in excessive amounts.

A teaspoon of honey in natural yogurt with berries cuts a better figure in summer than the TikTok trend.
