Goldenrod – bright yellow medicinal plant

It not only has beautiful yellow flowers, but also healing powers: real goldenrod is used for flushing therapy for bladder weakness and thus offers a herbal alternative for the treatment of urinary tract diseases. It is unmistakable because you can recognize it from afar by its bright yellow. The real goldenrod (Solidago virgaurea) is found in Europe, North Africa and western Asia and grows on nutrient-poor grassland, herbaceous meadows or in sparse forests. It was discovered as early as the 17th century as a means of flushing therapy for urinary tract problems. In doing so, she offers help to many afflicted people, because urinary tract problems are not only unpleasant for those affected, but usually also very painful.

cause of bladder infections

Women suffer from  bladder infections more often  than men because their urethra is shorter and is in close proximity to the anus. Germs from the anal area can easily get into the urethra and ascend into the bladder. But men also know the suffering. In them, it is favored by an enlarged prostate. Many of the patients regularly have urinary tract problems with symptoms such as burning, pulling, an intense  urge to urinate  and moderate success in urinating.

Therefore, a form of treatment with few side effects – in addition to the often unavoidable therapy with  antibiotics  or other chemical drugs – is recommended. Here a flushing with the real goldenrod is recommended. It is particularly suitable for the supportive treatment of urinary tract infections because it improves kidney blood flow and increases the amount of urine excreted. If you drink two or better three liters of a tea infusion a day, the pathogens are flushed out.

This is pure water elimination without loss of salt, known in technical jargon as Aquarese. Other medicinal plants such as birch leaves, horsetail or nettle leaves can also be used.

Ingredients and effects of goldenrod

According to the European Pharmacopoeia, the “dried above-ground parts collected during the flowering period” of the real goldenrod, i.e. the herb part of the parent plant Solidago virgaurea, are used. In homeopathy, the fresh inflorescences are prepared. The main ingredients –  flavonoids  and saponins – promote the elimination of urinary and toxins according to the principle of aquaresis. The real goldenrod also has an anti-inflammatory, antispasmodic and analgesic effect. These properties are probably based on the contained phenolic glycosides, which can only be found in it but not in other species of goldenrod.

The medicinal plant is also used for kidney inflammation or kidney gravel, mainly in the form of  tea  or drops. There are also indications that it is also helpful for rheumatism,  venous diseases  or chronic skin diseases. Scientists assume that the immune-stimulating effect of the saponins could play a role here.

Application of goldenrod

Externally, the real goldenrod, due to the tannin content, is used for inflammation of the mouth and throat and for poorly healing wounds. Caution:  However, if you have symptoms that last longer than three days, if you have fever or  blood in your urine , or if  you have chronic kidney disease, you should consult a doctor before use. Real goldenrod must not be used in the event of water retention as a result of restricted heart or kidney activity.
