Green light for use of new corona vaccines in the USA
Authority CDC makes recommendation for vaccines adapted to BA.4 and BA.5

In the USA, corona boosters can be started with the new vaccines targeting the omicron subtypes BA.4 and BA.5. The US health authority CDC issued an official vaccination recommendation for the corresponding vaccines from Biontech/Pfizer and  Moderna on Thursday evening (local time)  . The responsible expert committee at the CDC had previously backed the new vaccine with a clear majority.

“The updated Covid-19 boosters are designed to provide better protection against the latest circulating Covid-19 variant,” said CDC chief Rochelle Walensky. “They can help restore protection that has decreased since the previous vaccination and are designed to provide broader protection against newer variants.”

The vaccine from the Mainz-based company Biontech and its US partner Pfizer is recommended from the age of twelve, the vaccine from the US pharmaceutical company Moderna from the age of 18. The US Food and Drug Administration (FDA) issued emergency approvals on Wednesday. For the start of the vaccinations, which is expected for the beginning of next week, the green light from the CDC was still missing, which has now been granted.

The approved vaccines are so-called bivalent vaccines, which are directed against both the wild type of the  coronavirus , which is prevalent at the beginning of 2020,  and the currently predominant omicron subtypes BA.4 and BA.5. The subvariants BA.4 and BA.5 are currently prevalent worldwide; they caused the most recent corona waves in Europe and the USA in the past few months.

On Thursday, the European Medicines Agency (EMA) approved the BA.1  -adapted corona vaccines  from the manufacturers Biontech/Pfizer and Moderna. According to the EMA, the Corona vaccine from Biontech/Pfizer, which has been adapted to BA.4 and BA.5, is expected to be approved in autumn.
