If you suffer  from constipation  , you should not immediately resort to a chemical laxative, but rather try to get your digestion going again in a natural way. We give you tips on how to get digestion going again without chemical laxatives and introduce you to some natural laxatives and home remedies with a laxative effect.

Get your digestion going naturally

If you suffer from constipation, you should first take a closer look at your everyday behavior: How healthy do you eat? And what about your physical activity? We have put together some tips that you can use to give your digestion a boost without the need for laxatives:

  1. Be conscious of your diet: Try to consume foods that contain a lot of  fiber if possible  . Dietary fiber is an indigestible part of food that swells up in the intestines, thereby aiding digestion. Whole grain products contain a lot of dietary fiber. They are also found in large quantities in fruit, vegetables and legumes.
  2. Make sure you’re drinking enough. You should drink at least two liters of liquid – preferably water – per day. Not drinking enough can result in stools being particularly hard and difficult to pass.
  3. Become physically active: Go jogging, swimming, walking or ride a bike. Exercise is like a massage for the intestines and thus helps to stimulate digestion.

In addition to changing your diet, a light abdominal massage can also help with constipation: massage your abdomen around the navel several times a day. It is important to perform the circular movements in a clockwise direction.

Natural home remedies for constipation

If you suffer from digestive problems or constipation and you are not successful with a change in diet and more exercise, you can also use natural home remedies for constipation. These include, for example:

  • Sauerkraut or sauerkraut juice
  • Dried plums, apricots, or  figs  (Tip: soak the plums in water overnight and eat them the next morning.)
  • pear juice or plum juice
  • Kiwis
  • Legumes such as lentils and  beans

On the other hand, constipating foods such as  bananas , cocoa or white flour products should be avoided.

If the digestive aids don’t work, you can use swelling agents, a particularly gentle laxative. The swelling agents include, for example,  linseedpsyllium  or wheat bran. These natural laxatives should always be taken with enough liquid as they swell up in the intestines. Bulking agents can also be taken over a longer period of time without negative health consequences.

When taking bulking agents, however, it should be noted that they can delay or even inhibit the absorption of other medications. For this reason, medication should be administered to the body at different times.

Beware of herbal laxatives

Plant products have the reputation of being particularly mild and easily digestible. However, this does not apply to some herbal laxatives: herbal laxatives that contain the active ingredient anthraquinone are suspected of being able to cause particularly serious side effects such as cancer. Anthraquinone-containing laxatives include remedies made from senna leaves, aloe,  rhubarb  and buckthorn bark.

Anthraquinone-containing laxatives may only be used for a short time due to their side effects. In addition, they may only be prescribed for constipation and no longer to promote digestion. In addition, these herbal laxatives are only sold in pack sizes suitable for therapy.
