Hyaluronic acid for joints and skin

Hyaluronic acid is traded as a miracle weapon in anti-aging. This endogenous substance is also used in therapy for problems with joints. No wonder, because hyaluronic acid is a legendary  active ingredient  with a wide range of uses in the body. Chemically, hyaluronic acid is a chain of sugar molecules. It is precisely this fact that makes hyaluronic acid interesting for both medicine and cosmetics. Sugar has the ability to bind water.

Hyaluronic acid against wrinkles

Hyaluronic acid can bind around 6,000 times more water than its own weight. It is therefore ideal for use against the visible signs of aging:  wrinkles . But hyaluronic acid is not only important for beauty. Even if the largest component of hyaluronic acid in the body is stored in the skin and holds the cells together there, it is present almost everywhere in the body.

In joints, hyaluronic acid is responsible for suppleness and mobility, in the vitreous body it keeps the lens liquid. However, from the age of 25, the body’s own production of hyaluronic acid decreases. At the age of 60, only about 10% of the initial levels of hyaluronic acid are still detectable in the body.

Joints: Hyaluronic acid can help

The articular surfaces of the body are made up of cartilage. These are kept supple and intact by hyaluronic acid in the function of synovial fluid. Because the cartilage mass is surrounded by hyaluronic acid, which ensures optimal mobility of the joints and offers protection. However, with increasing age and under particular stress, wear and tear can be seen in joints. This wear and tear on the joints and the cartilage mass can lead to health problems in joints such as the knee.

According to experts, around 40 million Europeans suffer from joint wear and tear, also known as  arthrosis  . However, not only older people know the diagnosis arthrosis, more and more young people have problems with their joints.

Side effects of hyaluronic acid therapy

Frequently, the breakdown of cartilage or the damage to the joints has progressed so far that, from a medical point of view, an operation must be recommended. However, in order to make waiting for the  surgery appointment  as pleasant as possible for the patient, the affected joints can be enriched with synthetic hyaluronic acid in advance. As a result, the cartilage layer can again be nourished with sufficient synovial fluid and thus mobility can possibly be improved.

However, hyaluronic acid therapy is controversial in medical circles. On the one hand, because the supplied hyaluronic acid breaks down again in a relatively short time, on the other hand, because the desired effects can mainly only be seen at the onset of arthrosis. Again and again there is talk of possible side effects on the joints, in particular due to  inflammation .

Firm and glowing skin

Thanks to its moisturizing and moisture-binding properties, hyaluronic acid makes the skin appear clear, plump and radiant. For this reason, the substance is often used in wrinkle injections. Here, hyaluronic acid is injected into the deeper layer of the skin, also known as the dermis. The effect is immediately visible, but depending on the concentration, the hyaluronic acid breaks down again after three to six months. Nevertheless, the use of hyaluronic acid in anti-aging is very popular, since the possible side effects are also minimal. Injections may cause swelling or bruising.

In addition to the direct injection of hyaluronic acid, it can also be supplied to the body via capsules, gel or a cream. However, the hyaluronic acid cannot then get into the deeper layers of the skin, so that the effect is somewhat less than with wrinkle injections. With the help of hyaluronic acid, not only wrinkles can be treated, but also lips, ears, the nose or even breasts and nipples can be modeled.

Conclusion: hyaluronic acid

Adding hyaluronic acid can also help with  dry eyes . In the form of eye drops or as a solution that is sprayed onto the closed eyelid, inflammation in the eyes and redness caused by hyaluronic acid can be avoided. The conclusion to be drawn is that in cosmetics, in capsules or creams, the concentration of the active ingredient hyaluronic acid is important in order to actually be able to achieve the desired effect.

In medicine and cosmetics, hyaluronic acid is not only popular because of its extreme water-binding ability, but also because the risk of  side effects is relatively low  , as it is generally very well tolerated. If you want to float on clouds, you can also buy gel inserts with hyaluronic acid for your shoes and do something good for your feet.
