Israel: third vaccination also for young people

The fear of breakthrough infections among vaccinated people is increasing. On the recommendation of the Ministry of Health, people in Israel over the age of 30 are now being vaccinated for the third time. The reason for this is the decrease in the effectiveness of the BioNTech/Pfizer vaccine.

After people with previous illnesses and the elderly received a booster vaccination in Israel, the vaccination campaign is now being expanded.

Despite high vaccination rate in Israel: Incidence is increasing

Of around 9.4 million Israelis, up to around 17 percent have been vaccinated three times, and a further 59 percent have already received two doses of the BioNTech/Pfizer mRNA vaccine.

People whose second vaccination is at least five months ago receive a third COVID vaccination – Israel became the first country in the world to provide the vaccination booster at the end of July.

According to the Israeli Ministry of Health, there are two decisive factors in favor of the third vaccination:

  1. The effectiveness of the BioNTech/Pfizer vaccination has decreased significantly since the beginning of June.
  2. The highly contagious Delta variant is spreading.

For the first time since January, around 10,000 new infections have been reported on a single day this week. This is a rapid increase, especially compared to last week. However, it should be noted that the number of tests has also increased.

The pharmaceutical manufacturers are counting on a vaccination booster, since the effect of the vaccine could slowly decrease five to six months after the vaccination. In order to increase protection against the contagious Delta variant and to avoid breakthrough infections and an overload of the health system, there will probably also be third-party vaccinations in other countries in the future.
