Loyal cats: How cats promote our well-being

The playful and usually clever pets often have a mind of their own, but they have a positive effect on the health of their owners. Cats are also used for therapeutic purposes. That is why house tigers promote our well-being.

Around ten million cats live in German households. It doesn’t matter whether you’re a comfortable house cat or a curious explorer – cats can promote our well-being and reduce stress. How does the velvet paw affect our health?

Fluffy therapists for psyche and spirit

Stroking a cat can have a positive effect on the psyche of the owners. Because contact with the house tiger can promote the release of the feel-good  hormones serotonin  and prolactin as well as the cuddle hormone  oxytocin  . Oxytocin in particular can have a positive impact on social skills, anxiety disorders or attachment disorders.

The cat’s purr helps to relax and reduces stress, which is reflected, among other things, in a reduction in typical stress symptoms. Regular handling of the velvet paw can have a positive effect on our psyche:

  • Improved adaptation and greater composure in stressful situations
  • Reducing  depression  and its associated symptoms
  • Increased emphatic behavior and reduced potential for aggression

Cats support our organism

Contact with cats and petting four-legged friends can have a positive effect on the cardiovascular system. Intensive handling of the pet lowers the heart rate and blood pressure.

In addition, the cat promotes sleeping behavior and promotes a peaceful and restful sleep, which can have a positive effect on the entire organism. Cats are now also used in the treatment of dementia.

The purring of cats can also promote the healing process after broken bones. The slight vibration of the purr frequency of around 25 Hertz contributes to faster bone growth after injuries.

Contact with cats and other pets also has a positive effect on the  immune system  and thus strengthens our  defences . The velvet paws also help with illnesses and injuries: contact with pets can support our pain management and thus reduce pain.

Cats prevent allergies in children

Contrary to many rumors, the cat does not negatively affect the health of children and newborns. Instead, our offspring are already benefiting from the velvet paws. Because early contact with cats and pets can reduce the risk of  allergies  , at least if there is no history of allergies in the family.

Cats need affection

Even though cats enjoy the reputation of being uncomplicated loners, they also carry a lot of responsibility. The time required for care and employment should not be underestimated. Depending on their character, the animals tend to be clingy or prefer to enjoy their freedom. The playful house tigers should also be kept busy with toys or special food boxes. If the velvet paw feels comfortable, it is the ideal friend in everyday life.
