mRNA vaccination – increased risk of heart muscle inflammation in women

Corona vaccination with mRNA vaccines can increase the risk of heart muscle inflammation, especially in young people. Due to the well-known side effect, the Moderna vaccine has already been banned for people under the age of 30. According to the current state of knowledge, young men in particular were affected by the myocarditis, but the vaccination reaction also occurs more frequently in women.

Inflammation of  the heart muscle , also known as myocarditis, occurs   . As a rule, pathogens attack the muscle tissue of the heart, but an overreaction of the immune system can also damage the heart.

Increased risk in both sexes

Initial evaluations by the American VAERS, a monitoring system in which vaccination side effects are recorded, show that heart muscle inflammation can occur, especially after the second vaccination dose.

From December 2020 to August 2021, a total of 193 million people ages 12 and older received the   BioNTech/Pfizer and  Moderna mRNA vaccines in the United States . In 1,626 of these cases, myocarditis developed, mostly in the week after the second vaccination. A majority (82 percent) of those affected were male:

  • In the 16-17 age group, 105.9 adolescents per million vaccinated people suffered from myocarditis.
  • Among 12- to 15-year-olds, myocarditis cases occurred in an average of 70.1 per million vaccinated people.

Young men between the ages of 18 and 24 were also more likely to fall ill. After the second dose of BioNTech/Pfizer, approximately 52.4 per million vaccinees had evidence of myocarditis, compared to approximately 56.3 cases per million vaccines for Moderna.

Risk of myocarditis also unexpectedly high in women

Although fewer women than men developed heart muscle inflammation, the incidence rates after the second vaccination were higher than previously expected:

  • 10.9 out of a million 16- to 17-year-old girls developed the disease after the second dose of BioNTech/Pfizer.
  • 6.3 out of 1 million girls aged 12 to 15 years were affected by myocarditis after vaccination with BioNTech/Pfizer.
  • In young women aged 18 to 24, the rate after a Moderna vaccine was 6.87 per million.

Myocarditis – signs and signals

Further data could be collected from 826 male vaccinated persons. The patients showed particularly high troponin levels in the blood as well as abnormalities in the  ECG  and changes in the MRI of the heart. 96 percent of those affected had to be treated in hospital.
