MRNA vaccination: Various skin reactions possible
Skin reactions and rashes have occurred as part of a corona infection, but the mRNA vaccines can also cause allergic reactions and rashes.
Skin rash after mRNA vaccination
The most common side effects of the corona vaccination are headaches, body aches  and fatigue. The non-specific activation of the immune system can also promote the activation of skin diseases and allergic reactions. These side effects usually occur with a delay – but allergic shock reactions directly after the vaccination are also possible. In the event of immediate reactions, vaccinators and allergists must react.
These are possible skin reactions to the corona vaccination:
1. Psoriasis: relapses after mRNA vaccination
Sudden onset or acute severe flare-up of psoriasis: those affected suffer from a skin disease which can be noticed by a red, scaly rash all over the body. Stress, infections and also the corona vaccination can temporarily intensify the clinical picture.
2. Atopic dermatitis after the corona vaccination
The clinical picture of neurodermatitis can intensify as a result of the corona infection. Patients suffer from annoying, uncontrollable itching , which can occur more intensely at night. Heat, sweat, skin-irritating clothing or detergent can trigger the itching.
3. Acute urticaria following mRNA vaccination
Some people develop hives  (urticaria) after vaccination with the Moderna and BioNTech/Pfizer vaccines . The itchy wheals and/or local skin swelling can be triggered by physical stimuli, infections and allergies  . Corona vaccination can also be a rare cause of hives.
4. Shingles: Herpes zoster after BioNTech/vaccination
Shingles is triggered  by varicella-zoster viruses, which belong to the herpes viruses . The infection usually manifests itself in childhood in the form of chickenpox. After the childhood illness has subsided, the virus continues to lie dormant in the body’s nerve cells – there it can be reactivated at any time.
The corona vaccination can weaken the immune system and throw it off balance, which is why the herpes virus can become active again. Shingles usually shows up as a rash on the back. It usually only affects one side.
5. COVID arm: late effect of mRNA vaccination
The COVID arm is usually noticeable through pain and redness at the puncture site. Triggers and causes of the side effect are not known. Cooling down and taking a break from sports and exertion after the vaccination can promote the healing process.
