MRNA vaccine: Less effective against the Delta variant?

Despite growing vaccination progress, the number of corona infections in Israel is increasing. In Great Britain, too, there are repeated outbreaks of infection and new infections. Experts assume that the mRNA vaccine from BioNTech/Pfizer will be less effective than previously thought.

According to initial information, BioNTech/Pfizer confirms an effectiveness of around 90 percent against the new Delta variant. However, initial data from the Israeli Ministry of Health showed an effectiveness of only 64 percent.

Israel: BioNTech/Pfizer weaker on Delta variant

The  mRNA vaccine  from BioNTech/Pfizer prevents severe disease progression with an effectiveness of 96 percent according to an initial study by the British health authority.

Numbers from Israel, on the other hand, are now causing a stir. According to the Israeli Ministry of Health, the vaccine would prevent a severe course with an effectiveness of 93 percent, against a mild one with only 64 percent. The risk of becoming infected with the Delta variant despite full vaccination is therefore higher.

The delta variant is fundamentally more contagious than previous corona viruses. A primary vaccination offers very little protection against the mutation. Therefore, despite full vaccination, caution is required to prevent infection of people who have been vaccinated, unvaccinated and risk groups. Hygiene measures, contact restrictions and regular  corona tests  should continue to be carried out conscientiously.
