Treat nausea in pregnancy

About 75 per cent of all pregnant women suffer from morning sickness. For most women, nausea is limited to the first three months of pregnancy. In extreme cases, however, the symptoms can persist for nine months. Nausea is often accompanied by other symptoms such as dizziness, vomiting or diarrhoea. We reveal what helps against nausea during pregnancy and which home remedies are particularly effective.

Causes of morning sickness

It has not yet been finally clarified why many pregnant women feel sick again and again. Pregnancy nausea is probably related to the pregnancy hormone HCG . Studies have shown that women who are often nauseous during pregnancy have exceptionally high levels of HCG in their blood.

HCG levels peak between the eighth and tenth week of pregnancy, which explains why many women experience less nausea after the third month.

 

When and how long does the nausea appear?

In general, it varies greatly when and for how long pregnant women feel nauseous. Some feel nauseous only in the morning, while others experience discomfort throughout the day and evening. For many women, nausea starts in the fifth week of pregnancy and stops after the first trimester. In some cases, however, the unpleasant symptoms can last longer.

The symptoms are often aggravated by hunger, fatigue and stress. So try to avoid these conditions during pregnancy as much as possible: Eat enough, get enough sleep and regularly incorporate relaxation breaks into your everyday life. In addition, the symptoms can also be more severe in a multiple pregnancy.

Morning sickness is nothing to worry about

The fact that women are more likely to feel nauseous during pregnancy is no cause for concern: the baby is fine despite your symptoms. Nausea during pregnancy is even considered a positive sign. For example, women with morning sickness are statistically less likely to have miscarriages.

If you are spared from nausea attacks during pregnancy, you should not worry about it. After all, everyone’s body reacts differently to pregnancy.

 

Dizziness and fatigue as accompanying symptoms

Nausea is usually not the only sign of pregnancy – tiredness and dizziness often occur at the beginning. To prevent dizziness, you should eat regularly and get enough exercise. Also, avoid rapid movements – for example, when getting up from a squat or bed. If the dizziness mainly occurs when getting up, you can prevent it with light morning exercises.

If, in addition to nausea, you also suffer from a headache or fever, you should consult a doctor to be on the safe side. Under certain circumstances, other health problems are behind your symptoms.

Nausea during pregnancy can be dangerous.

For most women, nausea during pregnancy is annoying but harmless. But if the symptoms are very severe, morning sickness can also negatively affect the health of the mother and child.

An extreme form of morning sickness is called hyperemesis gravidarum. It is present when people vomit more times per day, eat or drink little or nothing, and lose weight.

Frequent vomiting can mean that the baby is missing essential vitamins and minerals. In most cases, the increased loss can be compensated for by targeted intake through food and drink. In severe cases, however, intravenous care of the pregnant woman in the hospital may be necessary.

Home remedies for morning sickness

If you feel sick during pregnancy, you don’t always have to take medication straight away – the symptoms can often be alleviated with simple home remedies:

  • Eat a little something in bed before you get up in the morning – for example, a few biscuits or some fruit. Alternatively, you can try a slightly sweetened tea. Because in the morning, the nausea is often particularly pronounced due to the low blood sugar level.
  • Eat small snacks throughout the day – this will avoid the feeling of hunger, which usually aggravates the nausea. Snacks such as biscuits, nutscrispbread, or rusks are well suited.
  • If you vomit frequently, keep your body hydrated after vomiting. Drink small sips of still water or tea. Fruits such as melons or grapes with high water content are also well suited.

Certain strong smells can trigger nausea during pregnancy. Cigarette smoke, coffee, perfume and greasy or spicy foods are possible triggers. If you are sensitive to these smells, try to avoid them in the future if possible.

 

Medicines for nausea during pregnancy

Many women do not want to take any medication during pregnancy for fear of harming their unborn child. If the nausea cannot be alleviated with home remedies, you should ask your doctor about suitable medication.

Pregnant women are often prescribed drugs containing the active ingredient dimenhydrinate, an H1 antihistamine. In addition, preparations containing vitamin B6 can help against nausea. If the symptoms are very severe, other medications can also be administered. Ask your treating doctor for advice on this.

Homeopathy in pregnancy

Like pharmaceutical medicines, homoeopathic remedies should only be used during pregnancy after consultation with a doctor, pharmacist or midwife. Some drugs can induce preterm labour. Suitable substances include:

  • White arsenic
  • Ipecacuanha
  • Nux vomica
  • Pulsatilla pratensis.

Relieve morning sickness with acupuncture.

Acupuncture is a branch of traditional Chinese medicine. During the treatment, thin needles are inserted into specific points on the body. This is intended to restore a disrupted flow of energy. More and more midwives are mastering this art – ask your midwife.

It has not been scientifically proven that acupuncture helps against morning sickness. However, many women report that their symptoms have improved significantly thanks to acupuncture. If you often suffer from nausea, you should try it out to see whether the procedure works for you or not.
