Proper nutrition for migraines

Migraines  can be influenced by an appropriate diet – experts agree on that. But what role does food play in triggering migraines? Can changing your diet help prevent headache attacks? While the actual causes of migraines have not yet been researched, it is certain that the individual attacks of pain are caused by a combination of individual triggers. Such so-called  trigger factors  can be different environmental influences, for example stress, weather changes, noise or hormonal changes. Diet also plays an important role.

Diet as a migraine trigger?

Those affected often observe an influence of diet on their migraines. Many report migraine attacks after consuming certain foods: Frequently mentioned are, for example:

  • red wine
  • Cheese
  • citrus fruits
  • Sweets

The flavor enhancer  glutamate ,  preservatives  such as nitrates and  the histamines  contained in alcohol and hard cheese, for example , are also suspected of causing migraines.

However, the triggers are not so easy to name. For example, some sufferers describe  coffee  as a migraine trigger, while for others caffeine withdrawal leads to seizures. And while  chocolate  used to be a trigger for migraines, we now know that  cravings  for sweets are actually a sign of an imminent migraine attack.

In addition, it is often reported that migraine sufferers suffer from certain intolerances, such as histamine or glutamate. Those affected should therefore carefully monitor the role played by diet in their own attacks.

Find your own migraine triggers

Experts recommend using a migraine diary  to determine the individual trigger factors  . In addition to the frequency and severity of migraine attacks, the following factors should be recorded in detail:

  • sleep duration and quality
  • weather conditions
  • nutrition

It should be noted that it usually takes several hours from eating to an attack.

Together with a doctor, those affected can possibly find the personal triggers of the migraine. If it turns out that your own diet is a trigger, deliberately omitting or eating certain foods can bring about an improvement.

Diet tips for migraines

Since the influence of diet on migraines varies from person to person, doctors advise against avoiding certain foods altogether. Targeted omission is only recommended if individual foods have been clearly identified as triggers.

But even well-known trigger factors do not have to trigger a headache attack every time, since it is often the interaction of several factors that is decisive.

Eat a balanced and regular diet

Experts suspect that the processing of stimuli in the brain of migraine sufferers is associated with an increased energy requirement. To prevent seizures, sufferers should therefore eat regularly, not skip meals – especially breakfast – and make small snacks to ensure that the body is supplied with nutrients. Drinking enough water is also important.

Migraine sufferers should ensure a healthy, balanced and nutritious diet that does not put a strain on the body. For example, too much fat,  salt  or hot spices can weigh heavily on the stomach. Ready meals often contain colourings, preservatives or flavor enhancers and are therefore less compatible than a fresh, home-cooked meal.

Vegetarian or vegan as a solution?

A fundamental switch to a vegetarian,  vegan  or alkaline diet can – just like fasting cures – bring about an improvement, since these diets do without some strong food stimuli. However, such skip diets can also lead to deficiency symptoms and, as a result, to an aggravation of the symptoms.

It is therefore important to monitor your own body closely and seek medical advice if necessary. Those affected should also pay attention to their magnesium and vitamin B2 balance. In addition to relaxation and exercise, the right diet can help prevent migraine attacks.
