Psoriasis: UV light comb for the scalp

A “magic wand” against psoriasis should help Germany’s statutory health insurance companies to save treatment costs. Two to three million Germans suffer from the genetic skin disease psoriasis. This widespread disease leaves unmistakable traces in 70 per cent of those affected, especially in the area of the hair on the head: massive dandruff, reddened foci of the disease and inflammation. When treating psoriasis in the hair, dermatologists increasingly turn to special UV light combs, the healing ultraviolet light directed precisely onto the scalp through the specially focused comb teeth. The statutory health insurance companies cover 100 per cent of the costs for the “magic wands” against psoriasis.

Treating psoriasis with UV lamps

In the past, essential treatments for psoriasis and neurodermatitis were expensive spa stays in special therapy centres, treatments with cortisone and – in the case of psoriasis – with salicyl. But even such expensive intensive therapies usually only help temporarily to alleviate the consequences of the disease. Long-term use of cortisone, in particular, also causes irreparable permanent damage to the skin.

For this reason, home treatment of psoriasis with UV lamps similar to sunlight has become increasingly popular in recent years. Health insurance companies strongly advocate these cost-effective light applications. In addition, many patients shy away from the time-consuming stay at a spa, given the now high deductible and the long absence from work.

UV light combs are increasingly popular.

“Sales of UV therapy suns for convenient, time-saving self-treatment of psoriasis and neurodermatitis have developed very positively in recent years,” reports Manfred Severin from METEC in Munich, Europe’s leading supplier of UV home therapy devices. Hairy parts of the body, especially the head, cannot be treated even with highly effective dermatological special solariums. With the UV light comb developed by the Munich company METEC, on the other hand, the hair is divided during use, and the healing UV rays reach the diseased skin directly. “The UV light slows down the excessively rapid, abnormal cell division. The foci of the disease gradually heal,” says Severin.
