Russian vaccine: How Sputnik V works
Four other corona vaccines are currently being reviewed by the European Medicines Agency (EMA). In the so-called rolling review, the first data, studies and information on the vaccines are analyzed in order to be able to achieve the fastest possible approval of the vaccine. Sputnik V has been undergoing the rolling review since March 2021. The first studies are now showing promising results.
This is the Corona vaccine Sputnik V
Like the AstraZeneca vaccine , Sputnik V is a vector vaccine. The vaccine uses two different adenovirus viruses (Ad26 and Ad5) as vectors. The envelopes of these viruses are designed to transport the spike protein of the coronavirus . This protein is responsible for docking the virus to our body cells.
The immune system responds to the vaccine and produces antibodies against COVID-19 . Ad26 will be used in the first dose, to strengthen the vaccine Ad5 will be administered in the second vaccination.
If you come into contact with SARS-CoV-2 at a later date, the immune system reacts immediately. The antibodies and T cells produced prevent the spread of the virus and thus a corona infection. Sputnik V is said to have an effectiveness of 92 percent against severe courses of a corona infection.

A study from Argentina also shows a reliable immune response from the vector vaccine. High antibody titers against Sars-CoV-2 were detected in 94 percent of those vaccinated three weeks after the second dose. These were able to prevent 90 percent of the cells from becoming infected in a special neutralization test.
Vaccinated people develop antibodies as early as three weeks after the first dose. According to the Argentine experts, people who have already been infected with Corona only need one dose of the vaccine.
Overall, in the evaluation of the Argentine researchers, Sputnik V shows a high effectiveness of 89 percent to 94 percent against severe courses of COVID-19 in all age groups.
It is not yet clear how the vaccine works against the Delta variant, which is widespread in Europe. According to the manufacturer, the vaccine could also be highly effective against the Delta variant.
