Schuessler salts: effect and application

Regulating minerals in the body and thus treating diseases – that is the claim of the Schuessler salts. They are also suitable for self-treatment. Schuessler salts have been part of alternative medicine for almost 150 years. After initial experience with homeopathy, the Oldenburg doctor Dr. Heinrich Wilhelm Schüßler finally developed an independent form of treatment. He called it “biochemistry” or “biochemical healing”. The basic idea: If there are symptoms of illness, there is a distribution disorder of mineral salts in the body, which should be compensated for by taking these salts. What is the effect of Schuessler salts and what should be considered when using them?

Schuessler salts: minerals in highly diluted form

Treatment with Schuessler salts has nothing to do with dietary supplements in which high concentrations of mineral salts such as magnesium, calcium or silicic acid are taken in the form of tablets, for example. Their effect is aimed at something else: The respective inorganic minerals are only contained in highly diluted form in the  homeopathically dosed  Schuessler salts. For example, the commonly used dilution D6 represents one part salt and one million parts diluent.

In this way, Schüßler and his followers do not want to compensate for a diet-related lack of salt, but to initiate processes directly in the body cells: This should make it easier for them to absorb the right minerals in sufficient quantities. The aim is to improve the function of the organs and stimulate the body’s self-healing powers.

Base Salts and Supplements

Schuessler himself developed twelve basic salts (or functional agents), later 15 additional supplements were added. The salts have the advantage that they are relatively easy to handle and are therefore also well suited for  self-treatment  by laypeople. They can also be used in children – side effects and interactions are not known.

Schuessler kept a list of how and when the relevant mineral salts are best used from his experience. Nevertheless, the effectiveness of Schuessler salts has  not been proven in scientific studies. Like many alternative healing methods, it draws on practical evidence of its effectiveness.

Schuessler salts can be bought in pharmacies without a prescription.

Application of Schuessler salts

6X is the standard potency for most Schuessler salts, the standard potency for salts No. 1, 3 and 11 is 12X.

The small, sugar-based tablets are either melted in the mouth or dissolved in hot water (don’t stir with a metal spoon!) and drunk in small sips, which are kept in the mouth as long as possible. In this way, the active ingredients are supposed to pass into the blood via the mucous membranes in the mouth and throat.

Rule of thumb: In the case of acute symptoms  , take one tablet every 10 to 15 minutes  , after improvement gradually increase the intervals up to a dose of  3 to 5 tablets a day  – until the symptoms have disappeared.

There are also  ointments based on the same active ingredients,  for example for skin diseases or bruises and joint diseases, as well as lotions, gels, globules and powders. It is also common to take several Schuessler salts.

Schuessler salts for weight loss

If the organism is out of balance, absorbed  nutrients  can no longer be processed properly and metabolic products are deposited. The result: losing weight becomes more difficult.

However, Schuessler salts are said to boost the metabolism and thus help to lose weight. The following salts are particularly popular for weight loss:

  • Nr. 4:  Potassium  chlorate
  • Nr. 6: Sulfuric potassium
  • No. 9:  Sodium  phosphoricum
  • Nr. 10: Sulfuric sodium

However, the right combination for losing weight varies from person to person. A doctor or naturopath can help to find out which weight loss regimen is most suitable.

It should be noted, however, that the kilos will not tumble with Schuessler salts alone. It also requires regular exercise and a healthy diet.

Schuessler salts: List of the 12 main salts

Schuessler salts are mainly used for self-treatment. But which Schüßler salt is the right one?
