Stomach-friendly Christmas

In the Advent and Christmas season – especially on the holidays – we put a lot on our stomachs. With the amounts of  cookiesmulled wine , stollen, dominoes and roast goose that we munch on every year in December, it is no wonder that our stomachs fight back at some point: bloating, flatulence  and  heartburn  are  among the typical consequences of an extensive feast. We reveal how you can get through the Christmas season without stomach problems and what helps if you have overdone it.

No Christmas without a feast

For many, a sumptuous feast is just as much a part of Christmas as the gifts under the Christmas tree. There is, for example, roast goose with potato dumplings and red cabbage and a large portion of tiramisu for dessert. After the actual meal, cookies, dominoes and all sorts of other sweet treats follow. And all of this is available in large quantities.

In short: Christmas food is usually too greasy, too sweet and, above all, too much. No wonder your stomach rebels. However, with a few simple tricks you can get through the holidays without a stomach ache – it’s very simple:

Allowed are:

  • Light soups and salads as a starter
  • Use low-fat meat or fish
  • Eat consciously – so you can also enjoy smaller portions

Allowed only in moderation:

  • Greasy foods such as roast goose
  • Very sweet foods such as cookies or stollen

Temptations at the Christmas market

Not only at Christmas itself, but also in the weeks before, our stomach has to go through a lot. Because it’s easy to be tempted at the Christmas market: delicious delicacies are waiting for us on every corner – but unfortunately these are usually anything but well tolerated.

You are of course allowed to try it, but if you load your stomach with bratwurst, fries, roasted almonds and crêpes at the same time, the food can sometimes  sour . So don’t overdo it for the sake of your stomach! Or at least fall back on  alternatives that are easier on the stomach  , such as hot chestnuts, baked apples or fried mushrooms (without cream sauce).

In general, there is nothing wrong with treating yourself to a larger feast during the Advent and Christmas season. But often it is not just a feast, but a real food marathon that pushes the stomach to its limits. So that your stomach doesn’t go limp, you should give it a break from time to time.

For example, if you overdid it at lunch, reduce dinner a little or skip it altogether. Alternatively, the next day you can consciously only choose foods that do not put too much strain on your stomach: make yourself a soup, a salad or eat a light fish dish with  rice .

It is also important that you  drink enough  – preferably between two and three liters per day. Use  mineral water  or unsweetened  herbal teas  . In addition, exercise also helps to relax the stomach during the Christmas season: just take a short walk through the city after the Christmas market or stay out the door a little longer at the weekend.

Despite all good resolutions, it can quickly happen that the stomach causes problems during the Christmas holidays. And heartburn, bloating etc. can quickly spoil our joy at Christmas.   1. Avoid spicy and very greasy dishes. Alcoholic beverages should also only be consumed in moderation.
  2. Eat several small meals rather than three large ones. If the stomach is bulging, this increases the pressure and promotes the development of heartburn.
  3. Tea  with chamomile, fennel, or  cumin  can help relieve heartburn.
  4. Don’t eat anything three hours before you go to bed. Then the stomach is mostly empty when you go to sleep and no heartburn occurs during the night.

If you suffer from flatulence, you should consider the following tips:

  1. Flatulence is particularly caused by foods such as  cabbage  or onions – if in doubt, avoid these foods.
  2. Fennel, anise or caraway teas can prevent or relieve flatulence.
  3. Avoid carbonated drinks – this way less air gets into the intestines. Also, make sure you eat calmly and chew food thoroughly.
  4. Heat, for example with a hot water bottle, or herbal bitter substances such as gentian root, centaury or angelica root often provide relief.

3 tips against feeling full

These tips will help to get bloated feeling under control:

  1. You can prevent a feeling of fullness by mixing some cumin into your food. The spice ensures that the food becomes more digestible.
  2. A cup of espresso after a heavy meal can boost digestion. On the other hand, you should better keep your hands off the popular digestive schnapps: Because alcohol inhibits the burning of fat – so the food stays heavy in your stomach for longer.
  3. Artichokes (also available as  juice  or capsules) are rich in bitter substances, which stimulate the liver and bile and thus help the body rid the body of toxins faster.

3 tips against stomach pain

The following tips can help relieve the symptoms of stomach pain:

  1. Lie down on the sofa with a warm hot-water bottle or a warm cherry pit pillow and relax.
  2. A warm peppermint or chamomile tea will help calm an upset stomach.
  3. Avoid lavish, greasy foods, instead reach for soups, salads or vegetables – this is easy on the stomach.
