Tetrazepam can be addictive

Tetrazepam is an active ingredient from the benzodiazepine group that was used to treat muscle tension. Benzodiazepines have a calming effect and reduce anxiety, tension and excitement. Since tetrazepam can quickly become addictive, the active substance is not suitable for people with an active or previous alcohol, drug or medication dependency. Tetrazepam was primarily used as a muscle relaxant. The active ingredient can be used to treat muscle tension caused by diseases of the spine and joints. In addition, tetrazepam was also prescribed for the treatment of pathologically increased muscle tension (spastic syndrome). The active ingredient may no longer be prescribed since August 1, 2013, as serious skin reactions can occur.

Tetrazepam side effects

The most common side effects of tetrazepam include dizziness, tiredness, drowsiness,  drowsiness , articulation disorders, unsteady gait and a restricted ability to react. Gastrointestinal problems such as  diarrheaconstipationnausea  and vomiting can also occur. Some of the side effects mentioned may subside over the course of treatment.

Occasionally, hypersensitivity reactions can occur as side effects of tetrazepam, which are expressed, among other things, by reddened and swollen areas of skin and mucous membranes. Rarely, side effects such as  dry mouth , depressive moods, drop in blood pressure, breathing and muscle weakness and a decrease in libido can occur after taking it.

In some cases, reactions that are contrary to the actual effect of the substance can also occur while taking tetrazepam. Examples of these reactions include  trouble sleeping , anxiety, and tantrums. In the event of such a reversal of the effect, which can occur particularly in children and the elderly, the treatment should be stopped.

Intake can be addictive

Taking tetrazepam can lead to addiction after a short time. In most cases, the daily intake of a usual dose over a few weeks is sufficient. For this reason, a doctor should check at the latest four weeks after the start of treatment whether it is still necessary to take the active ingredient.

If the active ingredient is suddenly discontinued after a long period of use, severe  withdrawal symptoms  can occur. These can include headaches, insomnia, increased dreaming, anxiety, restlessness, tremors,  sweating , delusions,  depression , muscle pain, tension, and seizures.

In some cases, the withdrawal symptoms also appear with a delay of a few days. They can last anywhere from a few days to a few weeks. In order to keep the withdrawal symptoms as low as possible, when stopping treatment with tetrazepam, the active substance should never be discontinued abruptly, but the dose should be reduced slowly.

Tetrazepam dosage

Tetrazepam required a prescription and could only be taken after consulting a doctor. He had determined the optimal dosage for you individually. Therefore, please understand the following dosage information only as a general guideline.

At the beginning of treatment, the dose is usually increased gradually until the smallest effective dose is found. Adults usually take 50 milligrams of tetrazepam at the beginning – an increase to up to 200 milligrams is possible. In the case of spastic syndromes, up to 400 milligrams per day can be taken in individual cases.

Since memory lapses can occur after taking tetrazepam, it is best to take the active ingredient in the evening before going to bed. Otherwise it can happen that you perform actions after taking them that you cannot remember later.

If taken regularly, the effects of tetrazepam can wear off over time. In such a case, do not under any circumstances increase the dose on your own, but contact your doctor.

In case of overdose, see a doctor immediately

If you have taken too large a dose of tetrazepam, you should definitely contact a doctor and have him assess the severity of the poisoning. A slight overdose can cause side effects such as drowsiness, drowsiness, confusion, as well as unsteady gait and muscle weakness. Higher doses can lead to unconsciousness, respiratory disorders and circulatory collapse.

Contraindications of Tetrazepam

Tetrazepam must not be used if there is hypersensitivity to the active substance itself or to other active substances from the benzodiazepine group such as diazepam. In addition, the active substance must not be taken in the case of:

  • a current or previous dependence on alcohol, drugs or medication
  • severe respiratory impairment
  • an acute increase in intraocular pressure
  • Breathing pauses during sleep ( sleep apnea syndrome )
  • children under one year

Patients with severe liver damage, impaired kidney function, shortness of breath or pathological muscle weakness ( myasthenia gravis ) must be carefully monitored by a doctor while taking tetrazepam. The same applies to patients suffering from acute poisoning with alcohol, painkillers,  sleeping pills , neuroleptics or  antidepressants  . Caution is also required in the case of movement disorders caused by diseases of the brain or spinal cord.

In older people, tetrazepam may be broken down more slowly than usual. In addition, they often react particularly sensitively to the active ingredient. That is why older people must be observed particularly carefully when taking tetrazepam – especially if they are in poor general condition.

Tetrazepam during pregnancy

Tetrazepam should not be taken during pregnancy or only after a careful benefit-risk assessment. Because the active substance can cause malformations and mental limitations in the unborn child. If the active substance is used regularly during pregnancy, in higher doses or during childbirth, the child may experience withdrawal symptoms such as flabby muscles, difficulty breathing and difficulty drinking.

If tetrazepam is taken while breastfeeding, breastfeeding should be stopped beforehand. Because the active ingredient passes into breast milk and is broken down much more slowly in infants than in adults. This can cause side effects such as poor drinking or breathing difficulties.

Interactions with other drugs

If tetrazepam is taken at the same time as certain other medications, interactions can occur.

  • If tetrazepam is taken at the same time as substances that act on the central nervous system – such as alcohol, psychotropic drugs, opioid painkillers, sleeping pills and tranquilizers, and H1 antihistamines – the effects can be mutually enhanced.
  • The effects of tetrazepam can be increased by taking  omeprazole , cisapride, cimetidine and grapefruit extracts.
  • Tetrazepam increases the effect of other muscle relaxants, which can result in an increased risk of falling, especially in older people or in high doses.
  • Taking tetrazepam and clozapine at the same time increases the risk of circulatory failure.
  • Cholinesterase inhibitors may reduce the muscle relaxant effects of tetrazepam.
  • If tetrazepam is taken together with other active ingredients from the benzodiazepine group, the risk of dependence increases.

Blood pressure lowering agents, anticoagulants, antidiabetics and hormonal contraceptives should only be taken together with tetrazepam after consulting a doctor. If taken at the same time, unforeseeable interactions may occur.

During the first few days of ingestion, driving or operating machines should be avoided. Tetrazepam can also have a negative effect on concentration and the ability to react later on. The doctor treating you must then decide on a case-by-case basis whether it is possible to drive vehicles and operate machines.
