Third vaccination – these are the most common side effects

The third corona vaccination is already being carried out in Israel and the USA, and the refreshers are also in full swing in Germany. The booster is now approved for everyone over the age of 18. However, people under 30 are only vaccinated with the vaccine from BioNTech/Pfizer, since vaccination with  Moderna led to an  increased incidence of heart muscle inflammation in younger people. But which possible  vaccination reactions  occur after the third vaccination? How often do these occur and are there changes to the basic immunization? An evaluation by the American health authority FDA gives the first important indications of side effects after the third vaccination with the vaccine from BioNTech/Pfizer. Overall, the reactions usually last two to three days after vaccination.

Pain at the injection site after booster

The most common reaction noted was pain at the injection site (89 percent). If you are in pain, you should avoid physical exertion and cool the affected arm with a cold pack, for example. Caution: To prevent skin frostbite, place a towel or tea towel between your skin and the Cold Pack. Cooling gels or envelopes can also help.

After the booster: tiredness and exhaustion

As with other vaccinations, the body also reacts to the booster vaccination. The  immune system  works at full speed – the result: tiredness or exhaustion. After the booster, 63.8 percent of the study participants indicated that they were tired as a reaction to the vaccination. Sufficient sleep and rest are usually sufficient to ensure the necessary recovery.

Headache as a vaccination reaction after the third vaccination

Almost half of those surveyed (48.4 percent) suffered from headaches after the booster vaccination. Sufficient rest, a cold pack on the forehead, or painkillers such as  ibuprofen can help relieve the symptoms.

Muscle pain as a possible and short consequence

Muscle pain, such as can also occur with the flu, was noted by 39.1 percent of those surveyed. Physical exertion should be avoided, in the case of muscle pain the body should be rested until it has processed the refresher. The symptoms usually subside one to two days after the vaccination.

Swollen lymph nodes more common after boosters

Swelling in the armpit area may be more common after the booster than after the first two vaccinations. Swollen lymph nodes usually subside after a few days. Overall, they occurred in 5.2 percent of those vaccinated.

Gastrointestinal problems occur in less than ten percent of those vaccinated. Symptoms include  nausea  and diarrhea. A hot water bottle and a bland diet can help alleviate the symptoms.

Heart muscle inflammation: only a few cases known

According to the FDA, there were no serious side effects such as heart muscle inflammation or sinus vein thrombosis. However, the Reuters news agency reports a few cases of heart muscle inflammation after the third vaccination in Israel. All patients were male, three between the ages of 16 and 29 and six between the ages of 30 and 59.
