Tilidin – pain reliever with side effects

Tilidin is a synthetically produced  active ingredient that is used in strong painkillers. The substance gained notoriety through its popularity in the drug scene. Some young thugs are also said to take Tilidin to be less sensitive to pain and less inhibited in a fight. The side effects of Tilidin are not to be trifled with.

Tilidin: effect and areas of application

Tilidin itself has hardly any analgesic effect. However, it is converted in the liver to nortilidine and bisnortilidine, which are responsible for the actual mode of action. These substances unfold their effect in the central nervous system, where they activate the body’s own pain-relieving system. Due to its mode of action, tilidin is one of the opioids, i.e. one of the opiate-like substances, and thus also has a euphoric, disinhibiting effect. It is usually used for severe and very severe pain, for example after  surgery , as well as for rheumatism or cancer patients. Long-term use of the substance can lead to addiction and severe  withdrawal symptoms  .

To prevent abuse, many tilidin drugs are combined with the drug naloxone. This is dosed in such a way that it blocks the effect of tilidine when administered intravenously in large quantities. On the other hand, at the low dose prescribed by the doctor, which is taken orally, naloxone has no inhibitory effect on tilidine. This should make the active ingredient unattractive for drug addicts, who usually need a higher dosage to feel an effect. However, not all tilidin drugs are combined with naloxone.

Tilidine side effects

Both pain patients and illegal tilidin users often have to struggle with the strong side effects of the drug. Tilidin side effects include:

In addition, tilidine is addictive in the long run and causes severe withdrawal symptoms. Police officers and experts who observe the misuse of Tilidin also describe a reduced sensitivity to pain, freedom from fear, overconfidence, megalomania, cold-bloodedness and, in individual cases, an increased potential for aggression.

Tilidin: dosage and withdrawal

Tilidin is available in both drop and tablet form. When dosing, the doctor’s recommendation should be strictly observed. As a rule, adults and adolescents take between 20 and 40 drops of tilidin a maximum of four times a day. Children under the age of 14 should swallow one drop a maximum of four times a day per year of age. If Tilidin is taken for a longer period of time, for example in the case of chronic pain or  rheumatism , the active ingredient can become addictive. This is also the case when the drug is combined with naloxone, because naloxone is only effective at high doses, which drug addicts would probably use.

Normal patients who take tilidin in the low doses prescribed by the doctor do not notice anything about the antagonist and can quickly become addicted to the active ingredient. Therefore, withdrawal is often necessary after stopping Tilidin. In any case, this should be carried out under medical supervision, if necessary in a clinic.
