Medication for an acute gout attack

An acute gout attack can usually be treated well with medication. Cortisol-free (non-steroidal) anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs), cortisone preparations and the plant toxin colchicine can be used.

NSAIDs such as diclofenac or indomethacin ensure the inflammation subsides more quickly and the pain is relieved. Cortisone preparations – usually prednisolone, used for gout – can be taken as tablets or injected directly into the affected joint. They are preferable to treatment with NSAIDs, significantly if you have impaired kidney function.

Colchicine can effectively relieve joint pain in an acute attack of gout. Due to its side effects. However, the plant toxin is rarely used immediately at the beginning of gout therapy. As a rule, it is only used as a reserve fund.

Be careful with certain medications.

If you have gout, it is essential to talk to your doctor about any other medications you are taking. Some active ingredients can cause the uric acid level in the blood to increase, making the symptoms even worse.

These drugs include laxatives, diuretics, and anticancer drugs, among others. It would help if you did it without acetylsalicylic acid to relieve pain.

 

Rest the affected joint.

In addition to taking medication, there are a few things you can do if you have a gout attack so that the symptoms subside quickly. The affected joint must be elevated and protected. If necessary, you should stay in bed. However, be careful not to overheat the joint. Ideally, cool it with cold compresses.

During a gout flare-up, if possible, consume low-purine foods. You should, therefore, definitely avoid sausage and meat. On the other hand, dairy products and most types of fruit and vegetables are well suited. Even after the gout attack has ended, you should pay attention to a diet low in purines.

In addition to your diet, it is also essential that you drink enough fluids. This is the only way excess uric acid can be flushed out of the body. The most suitable are mineral water and herbal teas. However, it would help if you avoid alcohol, as alcohol blocks the excretion of uric acid.

Low purine diet

Once the acute gout attack has subsided, the goal must be to keep the uric acid level in the blood at an average level and thus prevent another gout attack from occurring. A balanced diet plays an important role here. Gout patients should generally not consume more than 500 milligrams of uric acid daily and 3,000 milligrams per week.

More nutritional tips for gout

In addition to purine-rich foods, you should also avoid alcohol if possible. Beer is particularly harmful because it inhibits uric acid excretion and contains many purines. The following factors are also important:

  • Drink at least two litres of fluid every day unless there are medical objections to it. This will ensure that the kidneys are sufficiently flushed.
  • Avoid periods of thirst and fasting. It would help if you also avoided very lavish meals.
  • Reduce your excess weight. However, do this slowly and do not go on a zero diet.
  • Move! Physical training has a positive effect on uric acid levels.

 

Medical therapy

In addition to a healthy diet, certain medications can help keep uric acid levels constant. The following means, among others, are suitable for this:

  • Uricostatics such as Allopurinol inhibit the formation of uric acid
  • Uricosurics such as benzbromarone promote the excretion of uric acid

At the beginning of long-term therapy, uricostatics and uricosurics are often used together. After a few months, it is often sufficient to continue treatment with uricostatics.
