  • Nausea and vomiting during or after eating: This can indicate an acute gastrointestinal inflammation but can also be psychological.
  • Nausea and vomiting several hours after eating: Occurs, for example, with a stomach ulcer and a gastric emptying disorder.

A feeling of throwing up often accompanies nausea. Vomiting is a protective reflex by which the body tries eliminating harmful substances as quickly as possible. If vomiting occurs more frequently, this can result in a severe loss of fluids and electrolytes. Weight loss and damage to teeth can also occur over time. If you vomit more frequently, you should always have the cause of the symptoms clarified by a doctor.

In addition to vomiting, nausea can also cause some other symptoms. These include, among others:

  • loss of appetite
  • headache
  • Diarrhea
  • Fever
  • stomach pain
  • dizziness

When combined with nausea, any symptoms can indicate various medical conditions. If you experience dizziness, you should think about problems with the cervical spine and a disease of the inner ear – for example, Meniere’s disease or an inflammation of the vestibular nerve.

If your symptoms do not improve after a few days or if you suffer from severe pain, you should consult a doctor and have the cause of your symptoms clarified. Your nausea may be caused by a severe illness that urgently requires medical treatment.

Nausea – what to do?

Nausea (with or without vomiting) is a prevalent symptom that can occur with various diseases. Therefore, you must also inform your doctor of any accompanying symptoms – this usually simplifies the diagnosis.

Nausea with no severe cause is usually well treated with over-the-counter medications or home remedies. In other cases, medical measures – sometimes even emergency treatment – ​​are necessary. Appropriate medications to treat nausea include H1 antihistamines such as dimenhydrinate, meclozine, and promethazine, and prokinetics such as metoclopramide.

In the case of nausea accompanied by severe vomiting, you must prevent the body from becoming dehydrated. This manifests in symptoms such as a dry mouth, weakness, little or no urine, and apathy. It would help if you regularly took small sips of still water or herbal tea to prevent dehydration.

Four home remedies for nausea

In the case of nausea, avoiding greasy or spicy foods is advisable. If vomiting occurs, you should refrain from eating altogether for a while. If you feel a little better, slowly feed your body some stomach-friendly foodFor example, rusks, mashed bananas, or mashed potatoes are well suited.

The following home remedies are also recommended for nausea:

  • Drink a cup of warm peppermint, chamomile, or ginger tea.
  • Go for a walk in the fresh air. If you feel unsteady, sit on the balcony or in the garden with a chair. Alternatively, it also helps to air the room thoroughly.
  • Suck on a freshly cut lemon slice or add a few drops of lemon juice to a glass of water.
  • Carrots contain a lot of dietary fibre, which binds toxins in the intestine and thus helps nausea subside more quickly. Try it with carrot soup or carrot mash.
