Unusual corona episode: restless anal syndrome

The consequences of a corona infection can be varied – and often last for a long time. In addition to typical long-COVID symptoms such as persistent fatigue and breathing difficulties, there are also unusual consequences such as corona toes – a 77-year-old Japanese also complained about new problems.

After his COVID-19 illness, which was accompanied by  a sore throat , fever, cough and mild  pneumonia  , the Japanese complained of unusual symptoms several weeks after the infection – so far this has been an isolated case.

Restless anal syndrome after COVID-19: a unique symptom so far

Always on the move: The patient suffered from the unpleasant urge to defecate several weeks after contracting COVID-19. The urge to go to the toilet was great, but could not alleviate the problems.

Doctors tried to find the cause of the symptoms. However, possible triggers such as  diabetes  mellitus, iron deficiency and anemia (low blood count) were not diagnosed. On the other hand, the doctors found an unusual corona consequence – restless anal syndrome – when they made their diagnosis.

They base this on the Restless Legs Syndrome (RLS), which occurs much more frequently and also appears in case reports after a COVID-19 illness. The Japanese’s symptoms coincided with those of RLS. After treatment with clonazepam, which is mainly used to treat seizures, the patient’s condition improved.

Restless Legs Syndrome is a sensorimotor and neurological disorder. Those affected feel a constant urge to move, which is usually accompanied by tingling and pain when they are at rest. You can read more about Restless Legs Syndrome here:
