Vegan chicken – the recipe for the TikTok trend
The meat alternative made from wheat, also known as seitan, is currently a hit on social platforms. But the origin of seitan goes back centuries: vegetarian monks were eating the flour-water mix long before the internet came into being.
Vegan Chicken Grocery List
For the vegan chicken you need the following ingredients:
- 500g flour
- 200ml of water
- 2 THE Paprika-Pulver
- 1 EL Chili-Powder (mild)
- 1 tbsp garlic powder
- Pepper, salt to taste
- 1 TL Thyme
- 200 ml vegetable broth
- 1/2 TL Senf
- 1 bay leaf
Seitan – Preparation of the vegan chicken
It’s that easy:
- Gradually knead the water into the flour in a large bowl until you get a homogeneous mass. The consistency of the dough is perfect when it no longer sticks to your hands.
- Cover the flour-water mixture with a kitchen towel and let it rest at room temperature for an hour.
- Then fill the bowl with the dough with water until the dough is completely covered. Now knead the dough under water for 5 to 10 minutes until the water becomes cloudy. Tip: The cloudy water is an indication that the flour starch is dissolving. Change the water regularly until it is no longer cloudy and the dough has a tough consistency. Then the water can be poured off.
- Work the spices into the batter and leave to rest for another hour.
- Pull the dough apart as long as you can until the dough can be twisted into a rope. Either tie the dough into a large knot or tie individual small knots.
- Heat the oil in a pan, fry the dough in it until it turns slightly brown and then pour in the vegetable stock. Reduce the temperature and let the seitan simmer in the broth for 40 to 50 minutes.
- Then take the dough out of the pan and fluff it up loosely with a fork. Tip: The brew can be used as a sauce and used in various dishes. You can eat the seitan straight away or keep it in the fridge for a few days.
Tip: Depending on your taste , the vegan chicken can be seasoned with Asian or Mediterranean flavors.
