Water ice: a low-calorie refreshment?

As the name suggests, water ice consists mainly of the main component of the human body: water. There are also ingredients such as sugar, coloring and flavorings. Due to the high water content, water ice has hardly any calories. Water ice is particularly popular as a pleasant refreshment on hot summer days. If you want to cool off quickly and easily, you don’t have to buy ice cream right away. Water ice can be made inexpensively from seasonal fruits.

Lots of flavor with few calories?

Of all the industrially produced ice creams, water ice is considered to have the lowest calories. Despite its relatively high sugar content, the energy content of 100 grams of water ice is  just 60 calories (kcal).  For comparison: fruit ice cream contains more than twice as many calories, cream ice cream even three times as many. Because although milk ice cream is rich in protein and calcium, it is characterized above all by a high fat content.

In any case, the milk  in ice cream, which is advertised as a healthy source of calcium, is  often replaced by inferior vegetable fat or high-fat cream. So creamy and creamy ice cream varieties have a milk fat content of up to 18 percent. Consuming such high-fat ice cream can   result in side effects such as heartburn and obesity.

Despite its high water and carbohydrate content, the low-fat dessert is easier to digest than milk-based ice cream varieties. However, water ice has no vitamins, proteins or  dietary fibers . So water ice is low in fat, but also low in nutrients. Since water ice can only have a maximum fat content of three percent, it turns out to be the apparently less dietary sin compared to milk ice cream.

Better to enjoy in moderation

However, most of the carbohydrates in water ice come in the form of sugars. Regular consumption of the sweet cooling can cause tooth decay and obesity. Water ice should therefore only be enjoyed in moderation, because it causes the blood sugar level to rise quickly. This increases the risk   of developing diabetes .

Whether ice cream or water ice, if you want to save calories, you should only enjoy both desserts in moderation and exercise a lot. Then you can sin now and again without a bad conscience.

Make water ice yourself

If you want to enjoy homemade popsicles, you can easily and inexpensively make them at home. The big advantage of preparing it yourself is that you don’t need an expensive ice cream machine or a complicated recipe. In contrast to milk ice, water ice does not have to be stirred regularly.

The preparation of water ice is uncomplicated. To conjure up a delicious dessert yourself, you need:

  • commercial ice cream molds with a stick
  • a freezer
  • some patience

Tips for preparation

Everything that tastes good is allowed. All milk-free or water-based drinks  such as  iced teatea or fruit juices are suitable for the production   . If you like it particularly healthy, you can bottle organic juices or  smoothies, for example  .

The juice from pureed fruit provides an even fresher boost of vitamins   . Depending on the season, freshly squeezed citrus fruits or wild berries can be refined with a little  honey , sugar or sweetener, for example. The fruit cocktail then only has to be placed in the freezer.

There are commercially available plastic ice molds in all kinds of shapes and colors for this purpose. The usually conical or tongue-shaped collecting container is used to fill the fruit juice. After filling, the ice mold is covered with a counterpart. This lid has a handle to which the frozen fruit mix later sticks. It takes about 24 hours for the homemade water ice to freeze.

If the ice cream cannot be pulled out of the mold straight away, just wait until the ice cream has thawed a little. Then it can be easily removed and eaten immediately.

Water ice is unsuitable for diabetics

Low-fat and at the same time high-sugar desserts such as water ice can become a health problem for diabetics. Water ice lacks the high fat content found in milk or cream ice cream. It ensures that the absorption of sugar in the intestine is delayed. This ensures that the blood sugar level rises only very slowly.

With water ice, the blood sugar level can rise unhindered due to the lack of fat. Diabetics should therefore definitely compensate for the consumption of water ice with sufficient exercise. However, in the case of acute hypoglycaemia, water ice can help to bring the glucose content in the blood back to the right level quickly.
